Camp Floyd

Camryn's class (and grade) got to take a fieldtrip to Camp Floyd . . . don't feel bad if you don't know what it is! I didn't either! I got to tag along as a group guide, and we had a blast! We learned tons of things about our state and area that we didn't know before! I love history, and Camryn does too! The best part was that the entire fieldtrip was a hands-on experience!

I was so proud Camryn for digging right into that mud!

The kids got to make adobe bricks out of a mud, straw and sand mixture. They learned that in the 1800's, the army used the adobe bricks to build their barracks. It was hard for any of us to imagine building our own house one brick at a time like this!

The kids had to imitate the Pony Express and deliver a piece of mail to a "city." We were awestruck by the speed of the pony express (the real one, not the wood horses!)!

Another station was candle making. This was Camryn's favorite part! They dipped a wick in wax and hot water several times until it formed a small candle, which they got to take home.

The kids also got to visit an old school house. They learned about manners, poise, and had an old fashioned math lesson. To be honest, I wish school was still taught this way!

Recess was spent playing with "pioneer" toys! The kids were fascinated with the lack of buttons and technology! The moms were in Heaven because of the simplicity and lack of noise!

We got to visit a home with pioneer artifacts, learned to shoot a rifle, and visted a small museum while we were there! We had a great time! Thanks for letting me tag along Camryn! Love you!
